Problem-focused coping is cognitive and behavioral efforts to alter a stressful situation, and emotional-focused coping is cognitive Lazarus and Folkman co-authored a book called "Stress, Appraisal and Coping" in 1984, which worked through the theory of psychological stress, using concepts of Cognitive appraisal and coping. [5] [6] In this book, they were the first to make the distinction between "problem-focused coping" and "emotion-focused coping" which could result in consequences for both physical and mental health. [7] Lazarus and Folkman defined two major coping categories: (1) emotion-focused coping, which refers to the regulation of emotions that are generated by the appraisal process, such as anger or sadness in response to the appraisal of loss, anxiety, or fear in the case of the appraisal of threat, and eagerness and excitement, mixed with some worry, in the case of the appraisal of challenge; and (2) problem-focused coping, which refers to the management of the problem itself. Lazarus and Folkman went on to make an important and now widely accepted distinction between two types of coping. In one, the person attempts to address directly the problems that he is facing; in the second, the person tries to dampen or minimize the emotional state itself, without addressing the problem that elicited the state.
The influence of Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) transactional theory of stress and coping is remarkable and remains the cornerstone of psychological stress and coping research across multiple fields. In this chapter we review the key components of this theory, focusing specifically on the effectiveness of the problem‐focused and emotion‐focused coping taxonomy. Coping Coping är en psykologisk term som beskriver vilken strategi en person använder sig av för att hantera situationer som upplevs stressande eller besvärande på något sätt (Lord & Robertson 2005).
